SW Florida Pioneer Diaries online

The Gatewood Diariesis a digital reproduction of Minnie Clark Gatewood’s diaries, which she started at the age of 16, after marrying the Rev. George Gatewood in May 1892 and moving to Chokoloskee, a then-sparsely populated area south of Everglades City.     Her diaries span eight years, providing a rare glimpse of  everyday early pioneer life in Southwest Florida.    The diaries were loaned to the University in August 2000, by Vernon Peeples, a fifth-generation Floridian, former FGCU Foundation board member and state legislator, and were made available online with the cooperation of the Southwest Florida Library Network and the University of Florida Digital Collections.
