Dr. Kris De Welde: August 2015 FGCU Authors Series Honoree

Congratulations to Dr. Kristine De Welde, our 26th honoree in the FGCU Author Series of recently published books authored or edited by FGCU faculty and staff. Dr. De Welde’s book, Disrupting the Culture of Silence: Women Navigating Hostility and Making Change in Higher Education, will be featured on the Library website during the month of August and displayed on a poster on the first floor of Library West in the FGCU Authors and New Books area.

Kris De Welde, Ph.D., is Associate Dean of University-wide Programs and Faculty Engagement and Associate Professor of Sociology at Florida Gulf Coast University.  She earned her doctorate at the University of Colorado, Boulder in 2003 in Sociology with a Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies.  Her research and teaching interests include inequalities and inequities in higher education (especially related to gender), women’s resistance to violence, and social/food justice. She has published in prominent journals such as the Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, Feminist Teacher, Teaching Sociology, Gender & Society, and the International Journal of Gender, Science and Technology.  Her co-edited/ authored book titled Disrupting the Culture of Silence: Women Navigating Hostility and Making Change in Higher Education is in its second printing with Stylus Publishing after only seven months in print.  She has presented at dozens of professional/academic conferences, and has had the honor of being an invited lecturer within the community and on campus on a range of topics including gender inequality, social justice for migrant workers, the beauty myth, challenging homophobia, and reproductive rights. She has organized and facilitated numerous workshops on diversity concerns in higher education.  De Welde teaches a variety of courses including Gender Studies, The Family, Sociological Theory, Qualitative Research Methods, Foundations of Civic Engagement, and specialty courses on Hurricane Katrina, Interdisciplinary Gender Perspectives, and the Sociology of Food.

Each month a recent book authored by FGCU staff or faculty is selected and placed on display with an accompanying poster on the first floor of Library West in the FGCU Authors and New Books area. The author and book are also featured on the Library’s website, news blog, and Facebook page. FGCU faculty and staff are encouraged to notify the relevant subject specialist librarian if they publish a book.
